Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has opened up about his early career, disclosing why he often appeared serious and rarely smiled in his music videos.
Speaking in a recent interview with DJ Slim, Stonebwoy disclosed that he only realised the importance of smiling on screen during the shoot of his song Submarine.
According to Stonebwoy, his natural disposition at the time made him frown even in situations that required a lighter mood.
“I used to frown whenever I’m shooting a music video. I remember when we were shooting my music video `Submarine’.
“I mistakenly smiled, and the director was shocked. He told me that I have a good smile, so why don’t I smile often? That’s when I realised that I need to smile,” he recounted.

He further admitted that despite Submarine being a love song, he still maintained a serious facial expression throughout the shoot, something he later recognised as inconsistent with the theme of the song.
“The song was a love song, but still, I had frowned. That realisation made me decide that I would start being smiley,” he said.
Stonebwoy explained that his reserved and hardened nature stemmed from a difficult childhood experience that shaped his outlook on life.
“It’s actually not my fault. Coming from an accident, a 12-year-old child who celebrated his 13th birthday in a hospital bed, all these experiences toughened me. I was always in survival mode,” he added.
