Jay-Z quietly changed his name, here’s what it could mean

Jay-Z has quietly reintroduced the umlaut over the “Y” in his name, showcasing the name change on advertisements for his upcoming events.

The 56-year-old rapper will perform at Yankee Stadium in July, and with The Roots at the Roots Picnic in May. He is now referring to himself as JAŸ-Z ahead of those events. Specifically, his Yankee Stadium shows, dedicated to his debut studio album, 1996’s Reasonable Doubt, on July 10, and his 2001 album The Blueprint on July 11, display the new name.

Similarly, the poster advertising the rapper’s performance with The Roots at the annual Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on May 30 shows the name change.

It appears that the name change is the rapper’s way to remain in touch with his roots, as his cover art from his earliest records, including his 1996 debut album Reasonable Doubt and its breakout singles “Ain’t No N—a,” “Can’t Knock the Hustle” and “Feelin’ It”, featured an umlaut.

Last month, when Jay-Z released his new single, “Dead Presidents,” the artwork displayed the name change.

The new name has also been reflected on streaming services like Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, Apple Music, and more.

This is not the first time the rapper (born Shawn Carter) has changed his name. In 2013, he dropped the hyphen from his name and explained why. “The hyphen was really big back in the day. It’s not useful anymore,” he said in a Big Boy’s Neighborhood interview. “You change with the times.”

“I had umlauts over one of the letters,” the rapper and entrepreneur continued. “I removed the umlaut, too.”

In 2017, the 25-time Grammy winner reintroduced the hyphen ahead of the album 4:44.

“‘Jay Z’ is now a relic of the past, consigned to the dustbin of history,” his team said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly at the time. “In its place stands JAY-Z, now with the hyphen back in its place and the whole name in all-caps.”

Since 2017’s 4:44, the hitmaker hasn’t released a full solo album. He released the joint album Everything Is Love with his wife, Beyoncé, in 2018.
