Muslims and traditionalists may not be complaining about marriages not working because they can enter into polygamous marriages where the men make babies with the women and then drive out one woman once they're tired of that woman, and then bring in another woman to add to the existing wives. Polygamy may not have been forced on us by foreign agents, but it's an antiquated cultural practice that has no place in today's society. Polygamous marriages contribute to so many births within a family, often causing many of the children to drift into larger cities where they live and work under conditions that that are often undesirable, while many others are forced to run to foreign lands in search of greener pastures. Yes, children from from monogamous marriages also can be subject to the same challenges faced by children from polygamous marriages, but the problem is worse in polygamous marriages where men change wives the same way they change their pants. Muslims, for example, will point to the Koran as the source of the the right of men to marry up to four wives, but they surely can't point to any place in the Koran that allows men to kick out one of the four wives and bring in another wife. There comes a time when people will have to examine some cultural practices and then determine if some of those cultural practices no longer make any sense. Polygamy is widely embraced by some segments of Ghana society because it's an opportunity for men to exercise control over women, for differing reasons. In some parts of the country, one's prestige is held high depending on the number of wives and children a man has, regardless of the fact that many of these polygamous men often have a hard time taking care of their many wives and households full of children. It used to be an accepted cultural practice to kill humans to be buried with kings and chiefs, but Ghanaians have come to accept the fact this practice is barbaric and unacceptable, and no one in the country today defends that practice. We can therefore walk away from some culturable practices that are no longer beneficial to society. centuries ago, polygamy was a good way of ensuring that households had enough children and hands to help with farming and other chores since many children died at an early age for various health reasons. Ghana can't expect to fully develop by ignoring to place an emphasis on family planning. Soon, many of the countries that now accept Ghanaians and other Africans into their countries on a daily basis will place curbs on that migration, and Ghana, like other African countries, will be hard-pressed to to provide employment and housing to many of its citizens when those foreign doors get shut.
