Following the arrest of musician Showboy, the artiste initially resisted, claiming the police officer who came to his house did not have a warrant.

The incident gained traction on social media, with many questioning whether police officers can lawfully arrest someone without a warrant.

Lawyer Samuel Kissiedu in an interview on Okay FM explained that the officers who went to Showboy’s residence were within their rights to arrest him even without a warrant.

Showboy arrested after first failed attempt

“I saw that Showboy’s arrest sparked arguments among lawyers on social media about whether the police could lawfully arrest him without a warrant. I’m saying the police officers were within their rights to arrest him without a warrant. Even entering the house, they have the right to do so,” Samuel Kissiedu said in an interview on Okay FM.

The legal practitioner noted that as long as the police officers identified themselves and stated the reason for the arrest, they were acting within the law. He added that an arrest only becomes unlawful when officers fail to identify themselves or state the reason for the arrest.

“If you look at the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30), specifically Sections 3 through 10, it addresses this. Whether the officer has a warrant or not, once he has identified himself and stated the reason for the arrest, he has the authority to proceed. The only time the arrest becomes unlawful is if the officer fails to identify himself,” he noted.

In January 2026, when Showboy first resisted the arrest, he made a post on his X handle on January 30, 2026, explaining the events captured in the viral videos of his confrontation with the police.

According to Showboy, the officers broke into his residence while he was asleep in an attempt to arrest him. He said that when he asked for the reason for his arrest, they failed to provide a clear explanation and did not present a warrant.

However, the rapper has since been arrested and is currently in police custody, where he is believed to be facing charges of resisting arrest, publication of false news, and sextortion.
