The desire to be noticed on social media has pushed some netizens into performing stunts or what has become known as “fake life,” popularly called “settings,” to gain attention, especially among the youth.
According to social media personality and entrepreneur Aba Martin, popularly known as Aba Dope, she has claimed to be the pioneer of “settings” on Snapchat.
In an interview on TV3, Aba Dope explained that she joined the Snapchat craze around 2015 while in nursing school, at a time when Snapchat was considered the “boss” of all other social media platforms.
She recalled that during that period, she would perform stunts to impress her followers. For instance, she could sit in someone’s car and take videos from an angle that made it appear as though she was the one driving, when in reality she wasn’t.

“How I began as Aba Dope? I started on Snapchat. At that time, it wasn’t about all those other apps. When I was in nursing school around 2015, I downloaded Snapchat, and we were just posting all the time. I started ‘settings’ on Snapchat. I could go and sit in somebody’s car and place my hand on the steering wheel as though I was the one driving, but I was never caught,” she shared.
Aba Dope also spoke about undergoing liposuction in her quest to achieve her preferred body shape, disclosing that she traveled to Nigeria for the procedure.
Addressing stereotypes surrounding Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), she noted that the procedure is not as negative as people make it out to be, adding that cosmetic surgery has existed for a long time and is often used to remove unwanted fat from the body.
