Artiste manager and CEO of Media Excel Production, Kwesi Ernest, has expressed concern about the challenges women face in Ghana’s music industry.
He described it as heavily dominated by men and often unfriendly to female artistes.
Speaking in an interview on Onua TV on December 16, 2025, Ernest shared she has always wished for women in the music industry to succeed, but acknowledged that the system makes it difficult for them.
“I’ve always wanted women in the music industry to succeed. Our industry is too male-dominated. It’s like the men have taken over the music industry, so it makes women struggle a lot when they enter the industry,” he said.
He explained that while women may have certain advantages, not all are willing or able to use them to their benefit.
“Women have a lot of advantages but not all women can use the advantages to succeed. A woman can meet a man and just do something little for him to sign a cheque for her but not every woman is willing to do that,” he shared.
Kwesi Ernest cited Sista Afia as an example of a female artiste who has succeeded through hard work and perseverance.

“When Sista Afia started music, despite everything she came with, she worked so hard to be where she is today,” he stated.
He noted that Sista Afia has qualities that could have made her journey easier, but still faced struggles, including online humiliation and bullying.
“She is beautiful, she’s blessed with a nice body and has everything a man would want in a woman. I’m very happy Sista Afia didn’t give up, and she’s been able to go through the struggles for 10 years,” he said.
Kwesi Ernest also highlighted the gender dynamics in different music genres.
“When it comes to gospel songs, women dominate over men, but when it comes to secular music, men dominate over women,” he explained.
He condemned social media bullying of female artistes, stating that some people attack others online because they lack love at home.
“She’d been humiliated and bullied on social media several times. Some people just go on social media to insult and bully people because they lack love from home,” he added.
