Mother in Court for Abandoning Her Baby

A 24-year-old unemployed woman from Niger, Mariama Osumanu, who abandoned her two- month old baby girl in a bush near river 'Swanzy" at Suhum in the Eastern Region, has been arraigned at a Suhum Community Tribunal.

Mariama, who pleaded guilty, was bonded over in the sum of one million cedis to be of good behaviour, or in default serve two years' imprisonment.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Margaret Otuafo told the tribunal, presided over by Mr John Bentil that on June 28, following a report to the Suhum Police that a baby had been abandoned in a bush they went there and picked it to the Suhum Government Hospital.

She said Police investigations led to the arrest of Mariama and during interrogation she confessed abandoning the baby because the man, who impregnated her, refused responsibility.

Meanwhile, Mariama has appealed to philanthropists, individuals and other benevolent organisations to assist her take care of the baby.
