Popular Ghanaian actor Kweku Manu has called for businessman Ibrahim Mahama to be given charge of mining operations in Obuasi, arguing that foreign mining companies have operated in the town for years without significantly improving the lives of its residents.

In a message addressed to Ibrahim Mahama and the people of Obuasi, the actor said he had made the suggestion previously but was misunderstood by many.

“That’s why I was saying let’s give Obuasi to Ibrahim Mahama. People didn’t understand me,” he said.

Kweku Manu argued that despite Obuasi’s significant mineral deposits, the town’s residents had not benefited sufficiently from the wealth extracted from the area.

“Foreigners have been mining in Obuasi for years but we haven’t seen anything. The whole Ghana, Obuasi has the most mineral reserves but the people who live there are not benefiting,” he said.

He also questioned the lack of a commercial airport in the town, despite previous promises that one would be constructed.

“We were told an airport will be built there. But up till now, the town is only accessible by helicopter. There is no commercial airport there,” he said.

The actor contrasted the situation in Obuasi with communities where Ibrahim Mahama’s company operates, claiming that the businessman had provided significant infrastructure, including airports, schools and hospitals.

“But look at the communities where Ibrahim Mahama does his mining. He has provided a lot of infrastructure for them. From airports to schools to hospitals. God will continue to bless him wherever he is,” he said.

He maintained that Obuasi would benefit if Mahama were given responsibility for its mining operations.

“What the foreigners have not been able to do in 30 years, he did in a few years. So if he takes charge of mining at Obuasi, it will be beneficial for the town,” he added.

Gold mining in Obuasi, located in the Ashanti Region, dates back to the late 19th century. The town is approximately 60 kilometres from Kumasi and is connected to the regional capital by road.

Ibrahim Mahama, Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners took over the Damang Gold Mine in the Western Region on Saturday, April 18, 2026, following the expiration of Gold Fields’ mining lease in April 2025.

At the handover ceremony, Ibrahim Mahama announced that his company intended to build an airport at Damang within six months and hoped to construct a road linking the area to Cape Coast within two years.

The company has also pledged to provide astroturf football pitches for communities.
