Clement Yaw Yeboah Abrefa has shared his unusual love story with popular media personality Oheneni Adazoa, revealing that he made the life-changing decision to marry her without ever seeing her in person.
Speaking in an interview on The Delay Show, Abrefa recounted how what began as a wrong number call blossomed into marriage within a year.
According to him, he was descending from a SSNIT office building in Sunyani one Monday morning when he received a call from a UK number. Although he had been speaking with two people in the UK at the time, the number was unfamiliar. He answered, and that was the beginning of a journey he had never anticipated.
“The lady spoke in a very calm voice. She said she wanted to speak to her mother. I told her it was a wrong number because I was in Sunyani and her mother was in Ada,” he recalled.
The only difference between his number and her mother’s number, he later realised, was in the last two digits — 35 instead of 45.
After successfully reaching her mother, the caller phoned him back about 30 minutes later, saying she liked his reception and wanted them to stay in touch.
They began speaking regularly the next day.
Less than a month into their conversations, the topic of marriage came up. At the time, Abrefa was in his early 20s and had not been considering marriage.
“She asked if I was married and I said no. I wasn’t thinking about marriage at that time,” he said.
Despite never seeing her — not even a photograph — Abrefa said he was drawn to her calm and respectful way of speaking.
“I decided to marry her despite not seeing her because the way she spoke to me attracted me. I didn’t have any doubt,” he said.
It was only later that she sent him her pictures. But by then, his mind was already made up.
Interestingly, while he had no doubts, she questioned whether he was truly who he claimed to be.
“She asked if I was a real man. I told her I can’t answer that; all I know is I’m a man, normal and fit,” he said with a smile.
Before informing his strict father, Abrefa first confided in his mother. He admitted that he told her he had met Adazoa in person, even though they had never seen each other.
His father later sent him and his brothers to Oda to investigate her family background. The feedback was positive.
Less than a year after their first conversation, the two were married in 2004, despite being in different countries at the time. The marriage ceremony was conducted between the families while he remained in Ghana and she stayed in the UK.
What began as a simple wrong number call turned into a lifelong commitment, a decision Abrefa says he has never regretted.
