Ghanaian fashion critic and media personality Charlie Dior has revealed that his decision to stop attending church was influenced by years of discrimination he endured because of his appearance and personality.

Speaking in an interview with actress Joselyn Dumas, Charlie Dior recounted how his early involvement in church activities was overshadowed by judgment from fellow congregants.

According to him, he was deeply committed to the church choir, serving as a Sunday school teacher, and contributing as a choreographer.

Yet, despite his active role, Charlie Dior said he constantly faced criticism and exclusion due to what many described as his “feminine” traits.

“I was born into Christianity. I was Pentecost Apostolic. I used to sing in church, grew up to become a Sunday school teacher, and taught choreography. I did all of that—I was really in the church. But at one point, I felt like the people in the church drove me away. Most of the trauma I experienced came from the church—the judgment for being different,” he explained.

He added that the negative attitudes and perceived hostility gradually made him feel unwelcome, eventually pushing him to withdraw from church entirely.

He noted that the experience left a lasting emotional impact, especially because the church had once been such a significant part of his life.
