What happened when I announced measures against Shatta, Stonebwoy – Amandzeba

Veteran highlife musician, Amandzeba Nat Brew, who has served as board chair of the Ghana Music Awards over the years, has witnessed musicians nag, abuse, and insult the board, often saying all sorts of things.

In an interview on JoyPrime on March 11, 2026, he was asked which of the insults really got to him.

In response, he cited the Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy brawl at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, now Telecel Ghana Music Awards, in 2019 as a typical example.

According to him, when he was tasked with announcing the measures the event organizers were taking against the two, he faced a wave of insults immediately after the announcement.

Five 'shots' Stonebwoy threw at Shatta Wale during his recent interview

“My typical example was the Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy issue, where I had the task of announcing the measures we were taking against them because we thought that something quite punitive was necessary to whip them in line. From the very minute that announcement came and it was on TV, the insults came,” he said.

The 20th edition of the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), held at the Accra International Conference Centre on May 18, 2019, was marred by an onstage brawl between the two arch-rivals.

The ceremony, which saw musicians like Medikal, Kuami Eugene, Diana Hamilton, and Nigeria’s Burna Boy emerge as winners, was disrupted when an altercation broke out between the two Dancehall artistes and their crews.

When Stonebwoy went onstage to receive the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year Award with his entourage, Shatta Wale and his crew mounted the stage.

A scuffle ensued, during which Stonebwoy allegedly pulled out a gun, forcing guests to leave the auditorium.

Following the incident, both Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy were banned from the awards scheme, a ban that remained in place until February 2021, when it was lifted.
