Victoria Park doubles as sex park?

THE historic Victoria Park in Cape Coast famous for the role it played in the development of football in the country and for hosting very important celebrations in the colonial days and also in recent times is now being used as a sex park.

Showbiz investigations have revealed that some young men and women engage in sex at night at various corners of the park for money or just for ?flicks.? It may be the serene atmosphere created by sea the breeze that blows around the park at night that gives the young men and women a beckoning environment for their amorous activities.

Showbiz investigations also revealed that besides atmosphere some men prefer to have sex with their girlfriends at the breezy park because they do not need to hire a hotel room. Going home with a girl does not happen for many young men and women in the municipality because they do not have decent places of abode. In fact the 2000 Population and Housing Census indicate that there are about 6,847 houses in the municipality serving the more than 20,323 households and a total population of over 82,000.

It is estimated, therefore, that each house on the average accommodates about 12 people and this obviously makes it very difficult for some of the young men and women to get decent places to sleep.

But the scarcity of sleeping places cannot be an excuse for anyone to have sex anywhere at all. According to the Krontihemaa of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Nana Ama Eyiaba, it is an abomination to have sex at public places. She said, traditionally, offending parties could bring curses upon themselves.

There are also legal implications for having sex at such places as it is a nuisance to the public and offenders could be guilty of misdemeanour under Act 29 of the Criminal Code of 1960.

Rev. Ato Myles Graves, a lawyer by profession says it does not matter whether two adults have consented to have sex or not, sex at a public place affects public decency and they infringe the obscenity laws of this country.

Rev. Myles Graves, who is also a minister of the gospel, said it is even more grievous looking at it from the biblical point of view. He urged the youth to live decent and morally upright lives.

Ironically some other people use the premises of the Victoria Park for their prayers and all-night retreats.
