Veteran celebrities who have stayed relevant till date

There’s a time for everything and a season for every activity under the sun.

This is a quote from the Bible reminding us that nothing really lasts forever. In the wake of this, however, there are some personalities in showbiz who have managed to remain relevant in their space.

Fred Amugi

Veteran actor Fred Amugi made it to the movie scene limelight in 1985 after stints in drama and documentaries in 1970 when he starred in his first movie "Opinto".

Mr. Amugi has appeared in numerous movie roles, including local Ghanaian movies, Shoe Shine Boy (2013), Nyame Bekyere 1&2 (2015), Menua Paa Nie (2016), Housekeepers (2016) among others. His first international role came in 2005 when he played the character Kwame Attakora in the BBC drama Holby City.

He later starred in Netflix 2015 movie, Beasts of No Nation as "Pastor".

Amugi played the character Pastor Uchebo in the 2015 British award-winning movie "The Cursed Ones".



Kofi Adjorlolo

Another household name in the showbiz industry who has remained a favourite of Ghanaians is actor Kofi Adjorlolo. Despite joining the movie industry after over two decades in the media sphere in 2003, he has wowed his audience with versatility on screen, featuring in over a dozen award-winning productions.

The celebrated actor has featured in movies such as Princess Tyra, My Mother’s Heart, Heart of Men, Ties That Bind, Somewhere in Africa, Single and Married, Wipe My Tears, Ghana Must Go, That Night and very recently – A Husband for Daddy, a production by Shirley Frimpong Manso.



Samini

His name resonates in Ghana and beyond when freestyle and dancehall music is tabled for discussion.

Born Emmanuel Andrews Sammini but known on stage as Samini, after evolving from ‘Batman’. He has won the hearts of music lovers with his stagecraft and unending hits throughout the years.

Samini has seven studio albums to his credit with all being highly successful in the commercial market. His shot to fame with the release of his first single, Linda in 2004.

He got international recognition when he won the "Best African Act" at the 2006 MOBO Awards. After releasing his second self-titled studio album, ‘Samini’, he won three awards at the then 2007 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

In February 2008, he also won the "African Artiste of the Year" award at The Headies.

His third studio album, Dagaati, was released in 2008. After launching his 7th studio album on December 22, 2018, titled Untamed he won the Reggaeville 2018 Album of the Year.



Kwadwo Antwi

The music man, Kwadwo Antwi, affectionately known as ‘The Maestro’ keeps dazzling his fans with his annual concerts in celebration of his hit tunes.

His music which is a blend of Ghanaian highlife, Congolese soukous, Caribbean lovers rock, and African American soul and R&B has won him several accolades and awards across the globe.

Kwadwo Antwi burst onto the limelight in 1986 with his debut solo album, All I Need is You.

He went ahead to release twelve additional albums between 1989 and 2009.
Over the years, he has delighted lovers of good music with his clear and flawlessly seductive voice that radiates through his massive repertoire of smooth and sultry ballads.

He has a long list of hit songs that music lovers can’t help but include in their playlists. Some of his popular hits include Adiepena, Kayayi, Menya ntaban, Bra, Medofo pa, Tom and Jerry Aware and many others. He recently got featured by one of the 'new school' hitmakers, King Promise in a hit song 'Bra'.



Okyeame Kwame

Having started his music career at an early age, he has managed to stay in the good books of Ghanaians with his masterpieces and lyrically tongue-twisting songs. Okyeame Kwame first gained recognition in 1997 as a member of the duo- Akyeame.

Together with his partner, Daniel Kofi Amoateng, stage named Okyeame Kofi, they recorded four albums namely: "Nyansapo" ("Witty Knot" in 1997), "Nkonsonkonson" ("Shackles" in 1998), "Ntoaso" ("Continuity", 2000) and "Apam Foforo" ("New Testament", 2002).

He performed solo under his own record label One Mic Entertainment in 2004 and the rest they say is history.

Okyeame Kwame has churned out several hit songs much to the delight of his followers. His style, predominantly rapping in twi earned him the tag, rap doctor. He also has a long list of awards as well as ambassadorial roles.



Adjetey Annan

Mention the name “Pusher”, and lips of Ghanaians will curve into a smile. That’s the effect that Adjetey Annan has on movie lovers of all ages across the country.

He rose to fame after starring in popular TV series produced by Ivan Quashigah, “Things We Do For Love”.

His role in that drama series during his young adult life won him several other movie roles in classic productions and award-winning movies.

Some of the movies he has featured in over the years include: ‘A Sting in a Tale’, Life and Living it, Perfect Picture, Adams Apples sequel, Potomanto, Devil’s Detail and more recently, Yolo series, a continuity to his earlier feature, Things We Do For Love.



Amakye dede

He is known by many names but the ones which keep popping up are Iron Boy and Show Boy.

Amakye Dede is described by many as a legend in highlife music in Ghana. Having started his career in 1973, he has put up riveting performances throughout the decades since his entry.

His prominence and impact on music in the country, as well as his contributions in his hometown, earned him an enstoolment as a sub-chief at Agogo in the Asante Akim North Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

His popular songs include "Handkerchief", "Seniwa", "Brebrebe yi", "Mensuro", "Mabre", "Broken Promises", "Nsuo Amuna", "Sokoo na mmaa pe", "Kose kose", "Dabi dabi", "Mefre wo", "Okyena sesei", "Odo nfonii", "Nka akyi", "M'ani agyina", "To be a man na war", and "Iron Boy".



Reggie Rockstone

Reggie Rockstone is credited as the pioneer of hiplife and kasahari music. He is tagged as the Godfather and as a result, is popularly known as ‘grandpapa’ of the trade.

He is reported to have been the first musician to rap in the Akan dialect although he also raps in impeccable English. He started the Hiplife movement in 1994 and has released songs in that regard.

In 2014, he joined one of Ghana’s most vibrant group, VIP after the exit of one of the members causing the rebranding of the group to be VVIP.
