Across the world, musicians and stakeholders in the creative sector often call for unity among creatives in the industry, but rapper M.anifest has said that unity is not needed in the music or creative scene.

The rapper argued that unity is a myth and a “banner” that is mostly used by selfish people when they want everyone in the industry to rally behind them.

In a post on X on June 3, 2026, "The God MC" said that rather than just talking about unity, what is needed in the industry is cooperation, a modicum of ethical conduct, along with the creative and smart use of best business practices.

“We don’t need unity in our music/creative scene. Unity is a myth and a banner often waved by selfish people when they want everyone to rally behind them. What we need is cooperation, a modicum of ethical behaviour, quality control, ball knowledge, as well as application of best practices creatively and in business,” M.anifest wrote.

'Popularity doesn’t equal wealth' – M.anifest

Unity in the music industry can be described as the practice of collaboration, mutual support, and shared goals among artistes, producers, and other stakeholders.

A strong sense of unity is often said to bring several key benefits to the music community, including helping local genres compete globally and become more attractive to international investors and platforms.

It is also seen as strengthening the bargaining power of artistes, labels, and creators when negotiating deals.

In addition, it is believed to encourage creative innovation through collaborations such as joint projects and cross-generational features, which can produce memorable musical moments and expand audiences.

However, achieving unity in the industry is often challenging. The business side of music can create a highly competitive environment, where rivalries sometimes turn unhealthy and divide fanbases.

There is also the issue of selfishness, where gatekeeping and limited support for emerging talent can slow down the overall growth of the industry.
