UPDATE: 2014 Beauty Queen involved in accident; loses father

The 2014 Beauty Queen of the Asogli State in the Volta region, Mercy Dzifa Nukulenu has been involved in an accident, killing her father, Justice Amegah, 58-year-old Pharmacy Technician of the Peki Government Hospital.

Residents of Ho, the Volta Regional capital, and the Asogli State were thrown into a state of mourning after hearing the sad news of the accident involving the winner a 21-year-old level 200 student of the University of Ghana.

Mercy and three other occupants of the vehicle narrowly survived the accident.

Togbe Kotoku XI, Chairman of the 2014 Asogli Yam Festival Planning Committee, told the media that the situation was unfortunate, but added that thankfully, Dzifa and other relatives on board the vehicle were in good condition.

The Peki District Police Commander, DSP Jonas Kofi Agbevam, who narrated the incident said the accident occurred on Sunday at about 2:00 am. The five persons were on board the Toyota Pickup belonging to the Peki Government Hospital with registration number, GV 4175 C.

They are Dzifa; her late father; mother, Georgina Dake, 58-year-old Hospital Administrator at the Peki Hospital; her two sisters; 30-year-old Rejoice Nukulenu, resident of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region and 18- year-old Sylvia Nukulenu, who was five months pregnant.

They were returning from Ho after the Asogli State Dinner Dance and Fund Raising ceremony held last Saturday night, exactly a week after Miss Nukulenu was crowned the 'Face of Asogli 2014'.

She was also made the 'Educational Ambassador' for Asogli State and tasked to help address the poor academic performance of pupils in the area.

DSP Agbevam said as the vehicle was approaching Peki from the Asikuma end of the road, it veered off onto the opposite lane and hit the back of a parked Kia Rhino vehicle loaded with charcoal.

He said the impact, which mostly affected the driver, Dzifa's father which was so great that the vehicle was mangled beyond repairs.

The four survivors were responding to treatment.
