Two teenagers drowned, two rescued

Ho, Dec. 13, GNA - Two teenagers have drowned and two rescued by fishermen when swift tidal waves swept away a group of merry makers while swimming in the sea last Sunday at Aflao. The two, whose bodies have since been recovered were named as Mawuli Adenyo, 14, a primary 6 pupil of Sepenukope Basic School at Aflao and Kojo Baba, 13, a friend.

An eyewitness account stated that holidaymakers who thronged the beach were engaged in fun games and swimming during when the swift currents carried the four deeper into the sea resulting in the death of the two and the two others saved. Mr. Samuel Sackitey, Aflao District Police Commander said his outfit was not informed of the incident, a common attitude among fisher folks in keeping drowning incidents secret from the security or reducing the number of casualties.

Miss Anthonia Kwablavi, Headmistress of Adenyo's school said she heard of the incident from her pupils on Monday before it was confirmed by his parents. A pupil of the school also told the GNA that Adenyo and members of a youth football club he (Adenyo) formed and led were romping in the sea after a morning soccer drill at "Small-Small" beach when the disaster struck. Baba's body had since been buried while that of Adenyo at the morgue in Lome, Togo, where the body was washed ashore.
