Taxi driver wins 500 million cedi life insurance policy

Tamale, Dec. 16, GNA - Mr Abdul Fatawu Shaibu, a Taxi Driver in Tamale on Saturday won a 500 million-cedi life insurance policy with the Metropolitan Insurance Company (MET) for one year in a quiz competition on road safety campaign in Tamale.

The Makenba Broadcasting Company, operators of Diamond FM, a Tamale-based radio station, organised the quiz to help educate the public on the need to observe road regulations. Some 20 participants took part in the quiz competition and answered questions on road signs, traffic signals and general knowledge in vehicles and their signals.

The first and second runners up also took away 400,000 and 200,000 cedis each as motivation to ensure that others would take part in next year's competition.

The Metropolitan Insurance Company (MET) and the State Insurance Company jointly sponsored the programme to encourage people to patronise life and property insurance in the country. Mr Edward Ameyibor, General Manager of Diamond FM, attributed the carnage on the roads to mechanical failures and poor quality of vehicle spare parts.

He appealed to policy makers to have the political will and ban the importation of over-used vehicles and their parts, especially lorry tyres to minimise accidents on the roads to safe lives. He commended the competitors, particularly the Taxi drivers, for taking the interest in the competition and gave the assurance that Makenba would continue to organise the programme on yearly basis to ensure that drivers and other road users were abreast with road signs and regulations to reduce accidents, particularly during festive occasions.

Mr Emmanuel Odonkor Baah, Police Officer in charge of the Tamale court Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, advised road users to always remain patient and respect road signals to safe lives. He said most of the accidents that occur throughout the country were avoidable and that it was necessary for drivers to refresh their minds on the road signs, regulations and how to avoid accidents. 16 Dec. 06
