Talented youths, hungry for the advertised prizes in the Glo ‘Dance With Peter’ project, on Tuesday literally fired the dance floor with impressive dance steps in order to impress the judges and book their places in the main competition expected by the middle of this month.
The project, which is aimed at identifying, nurturing and rewarding the best dancers in Ghana and Nigeria, is being spearheaded by Peter Okoye, one of the P-Square duo, himself a highly acclaimed dancer.
Tuesday’s auditions had many young dancers in Ghana hitting the dance floor to exhibit their talents in hope of booking a spot in the six slots given Ghana in the final assembly of contestants expected to converge in Lagos from September 12 for a gruelling thirteen weeks of teaching, mentoring and programmed elimination that will eventually throw up the top three winners.
The eventual winners will smile home with cash prizes and brand new cars. The best dancer will coast home with the sum of GHc45,000, a brand new Toyota RAV4 and a rare opportunity to feature in P-Square’s next music video.
The first runner-up goes home with GHc30,000 and a brand new Honda Civc car while the second runner-up will have the sum of GHc15,000 and a brand new Kia Rio car. The audition holds at the National Theatre, Accra.
There are other numerous consolation prizes for others, including subscribers who will participate in trivia contests.
An overly excited Peter Okoye disclosed at the event venue in Accra that he was excited at the huge response of dance talents in Ghana.
“This shows that dance is gaining better acceptance all over. We are proud to work with Glo in fishing out the best among the talents that have gathered here today with a view to giving them a good platform to work on their passion”, he said.
He added that the assemblage of the various winners from the auditions will create a huge pool of talents and a very keen contest, going by what he saw in Abuja last week and Accra, Ghana on Tuesday.
“I have been a little shocked myself that we have very good talents who hardly have had the platform to take their passion to a higher level and build a career out of it. We are aiming at this with a rich faculty of dance experts and instructors.
Apart from the exciting and huge prizes, we want to be able to prod some of these talents to pursue their passion beyond recreation”, he added.
Some of the contestants who spoke during the auditions expressed happiness that such a project came their way from Glo Mobile and Peter. James, a student who just got admission to read Communications in one of the universities in Accra said he was hopeful of being selected from Accra as he had always taken dance as part of everyday life. “I cant imagine not dancing for a day”, he said, adding that it would appear that Dance With Peter was a divine project to help him take make a better life out of dancing.
The competition is open to individuals from different dance backgrounds, be it solo, duet or group. From Accra auditions, six dancers or groups will be selected to join others in a competition phase in Lagos. Viewers can monitor the show weekly on TV3.
