A Florida woman accused of opening fire near Rihanna’s Beverly Hills residence has denied attempting to kill the global music star, as newly released police documents shed light on the frightening encounter.
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, a 35-year-old from Orlando with no prior criminal record, entered a not guilty plea on Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Through her attorney, she also rejected more than a dozen additional felony charges tied to the incident.
Investigators say Ortiz drove up to the property in a white Tesla on March 8 and fired at least 20 rounds from an AR-15-style rifle towards the home and a neighbouring residence. At the time, Rihanna, her partner A$AP Rocky, and others, including their children, were on the premises. No injuries were reported.
A police report, made public through a court filing, indicates that some of the bullets struck an Airstream trailer parked in the driveway. Rihanna later told detectives she had been seated by a window when she heard a series of loud metallic bangs. When she pulled back the curtain, she saw bullet damage on the trailer’s front window.
Rocky had been asleep inside the trailer. According to the report, Rihanna woke him urgently, shouting that someone was shooting. The two dropped to the floor before rushing into the main house, where their children, her mother, and the staff were located.
Damage from the gunfire extended beyond the trailer. Authorities documented bullet holes in the home’s gates and exterior walls, fragments on the front porch, and at least one strike near a second-floor nursery where the children were with a nanny. The nanny initially dismissed the sounds as something other than gunfire.
Ortiz declined to cooperate with detectives following her arrest, requesting a lawyer. However, she briefly spoke once during questioning, according to the report.
“Can I say one sentence?” she said. “I would like to say that I wasn’t attempting murder. But that’s all I wanted to say.”
Prosecutors have charged her with 10 counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, corresponding to the number of people present across the two properties, along with three counts of shooting at occupied structures. A conviction on all counts could result in a life sentence.
Ortiz appeared in court behind glass, dressed in yellow jail attire with braided blonde hair, the AP reported. She spoke only to waive her right to a speedy preliminary hearing.
Her attorney, Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman, argued for a significant reduction in her $1.9 million bail, citing her financial situation. Judge Theresa McGonigle rejected the request.
Prosecutors insisted Ortiz poses a serious threat and flight risk.
“This case involves a dangerous, deliberate shooting into occupied homes,” Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott said. “This is the kind of conduct that could easily have resulted in multiple homicides.”
Authorities say Ortiz was apprehended hours after the shooting while alone in her vehicle, which contained the rifle, additional ammunition, and a wig believed to have been used as a disguise.
Records show she has worked as a licensed speech pathologist for over a decade. Following a request from the state attorney general, the court ruled she cannot practise in California.
Officials have not disclosed a motive or clarified any potential connection between Ortiz and Rihanna. District Attorney Nathan Hochman confirmed that both remain under investigation, along with Ortiz’s social media activity in the days leading up to the shooting.
