Stop Playing Profane Lyrics ? FIDA Threatens DJs

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Ghana has threatened a showdown with some disc jockeys and FM radio stations for persistently and consistently playing music with profane lyrics. The aggrieved women have indicated their intention to drag the offenders to court saying the kind of music they play is not only profane but also debases feminity and the bodies of women to the lowest level.

A statement issued in Accra and signed by Executive Secretary of FIDA, Miss Gloria Ofori Boadu said the music under attack “constitutes violence against women on the airwaves”.

According to the statement, FIDA would seek the High Court’s constitutional authority to enforce the fundamental human rights and freedoms, particularly, in terms of discrimination against women in the description of their character in the lyrics of such songs. Furthermore the federation also intends to ask for an order to compel the Ministry of Information and National Media Commission to play an active monitoring role over the local FM stations.
