Statuette of First Miss Ghana unveiled at Hohoe

Hohoe, Mar 6, GNA - The statuette of Miss Ghana 1957, Monica Amekoafia of blessed memory, has been unveiled at a brief ceremony as part of the country's Golden Jubilee celebration at Hohoe.

The statuette, erected in front of the Hohoe Post Office, was in ivory and christened "Miss Monica Amekoafia" or "Miss Ghana." The statuette depicted Miss Amekoafia as a gem of Ghanaian beauty wearing a crown with a sash across her right shoulder with an inscription Miss Ghana.

That beauty contest, organized by the Department of Social Welfare, was held at the Accra Community Centre on March 4, 1957, and 22-year old Miss Amekoafia, from Alavanyo in the erstwhile Trans Volta Togoland now Volta Region, represented the Greater Accra Region.

Mr John Peter Amewu, the Hohoe District Chief Executive, said the erection of the statuette was to immortalize the late Miss Ameakoafia as an instrument of inspiration to the present generation especially the youth.

Mamaga Dewotornyo I, Queen of Gbi Traditional Area, commended the district assembly for honouring Miss Amekoafia. 06 March 07
