Shirley Frimpong Manso Goes The ‘Kyeiwaa’ Way

Celebrated Ghanaian movie Producer/Director, Shirley Frimpong Manso who has been openly opposed to the division of movies into several parts (like Kyeiwaa Part 1-12) seem to be toeing the same line with her new movie “Adams Apples”.

Shirley disclosed to mediamen at the press preview on Thursday April 14, 2011 at Silverbird cinema, Accra Mall that the movie comprises of ten different chapters out of which “Adams Apples” is the first. She added that she will release one movie every month with different titles from April 2011 to February 2012.

When Shirley was asked if this is her own way of the ‘Kyeiwaa part one and two’ she said “Well you can say it that way except that this is different because as far as i'm concerned the 'part ones and twos' are usually just about 45 minutes long for each part, but this is a full movie which is about 1hour 30 minutes. With this one, every chapter comes with its own title because each one has a different theme and it is such that you can’t watch one and decide not to watch the rest. So yes, the story unfolds in chapters and I think that it is very different from the movies in many parts on the market,” she told peacefmonline.com

Asked if legendary film maker Kwaw Ansah's “Good Old Days” which is in 24 parts influenced her decision to do a ten chaptered movie, Shirley said they were at the pre-production stage when Mr. Kwaw Ansah's movie “Love of AA” was released.

“I think Uncle Kwaw Ansah’s is a little different from ours because his movie was set in the olden days and the story is very different from Adams Apple but I guess we will all run along”.

When peacefmonline.com asked her if this should be considered as a new phenomenon in the Ghana Movie Industry she answered; “It is an individual thing. I am not doing this to turn the industry around or anything. This is from the camp of Sparrow Production and if people see it and enjoy it, fine, and if other production houses want to pursue the same thing, I don’t have any problem, we just want to entertain”.

The movie is about the life of the “Adams” family. An ex-diplomat’s wife played by “Anima Misah and her three daughters (Naa Ashorkor, Joselyn Dumas and Yvonne Okoro)

The movie shows the mother and daughter relationship and how they are able to support each other in their various domestic challenges and relationship problems.

The long list of cast in the movie includes: Yvone Okoro, Jocelyn Dumas, Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku, and Anima Misa Amoah, Ajetey Anang, John Dumelo, KSM, KOD, Fiifi Coleman, Helen Asante, Roselyn Ngiza, Benny Fiifi Eshun and many new exciting faces.

Each chapter of Adams Apples will be premiered at the cinema every month over a 12-month period, after which it will be released on DVD in the same month. The first chapter will begin with a grand premiere on the 21st of April 2011 at the National Theatre in Accra and will be shown at the Silverbird Cinema for two weeks.

Subsequent chapters will be released consecutively at the Silver bird cinema till February 2012.
