Salaga SSS retains Constitution Game Championship

Accra, April 28, GNA - The Northern Regional Civic Education Clubs Champions, Salaga Secondary School on Friday picked 27 points to beat 10 other regional representatives of Second Cycle Schools to retain the converted trophy at a colourful ceremony to usher in the Annual National Constitution Week celebration in Accra.

The Competition that formed part of activities marking the sixth Constitution Week celebration was organised at the regional levels with the regional champions congregating in Accra for the final of finals. Saint Francis Xavier Junior Seminary representing the Upper West Region came second with 25 points while Anfoega Secondary School from the Volta Region bagged 22 points to take the third positions. Salaga received a gold plated metallic Constitution Week plaque and a set of professional public address systems and 60 copies of the pocket-size 1992 Constitution donated by NCCE and AllShore Company Limited; 400,000 cedis cash, two copies of the Constitution Game and copies of 2006 NCCE calendar.

St Francis received 21 inch colour television set, one ebony wooden plaque, 250,000 cedis and Anfoega took away one ebony wooden plaque, 20-inch colour television set.

In addition to the special awards all the competitors received 60 copies of the 1992 Constitution, copies of NCCE 2006 Calendar, T-shirts and other items.

Ada Secondary School from the Greater Accra Region, which emerged fourth with 19 points, received one ebony wooden plaque, one high Compact Disc Audio recorder, bass blaster with remote control and playback functions and 200,000 cedis.

Sunyani Secondary School had 17 points to take the fifth place and received a one ebony wooden plaque, one high power transistor Megaphone with siren and voice range capacity of 800 metres and 200,000 cedis. The rest are Swedru Secondary representing the Central Region, sixth; Aburi Secondary School representing Eastern Region, seventh; Nsein Secondary School representing Western Region eighth; Agogo State College, Ashanti Regional representative occupied the ninth position; Notre Dame Minor Seminary of Upper East Region came 10th and Tolon Secondary School also from the Northern Region took the 11th position. Presenting the awards, Mr Laary Bimi, NCCE Chairman said the introduction of Civic Education for Schools, which used to be an examinable academic discipline, would be the best legacy President John Agyekum Kufuor could leave to the country and future generation. He said President Kufuor held the key for the re-introduction of Civic Education, which is long over due and urged the educational authorities to start the modalities for its re-introduction. The Constitution Game forms part of activities to commence national, regional and district activities of the Constitution Week celebration, which aimed at educating citizens on how to use local participation and social auditing for poverty reduction.

The NCCE, main organisers of the annual event, explained that the essence of local participation and auditing for poverty reduction was to overcome challenges of poverty, enhance democratic governance and create social auditors at the community levels. 28 April 06
