Revellers Dumping of condoms into Lake Bosomtwe

Kuntanase (Ash), April 4, GNA - The dumping of condoms into Lake Bosomtwe by revellers who throng Abono during holidays and festive occasions came up strongly at the people's assembly at Kuntanase in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma district of Ashanti on Monday.

Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister, who raised the issue, deplored this attitude and said it was of grave concern to the regional administration.

He said the situation posed danger to the health of the communities, which depended on the lake for their survival. The Regional Minister therefore called for a halt to that attitude to keep the lake free from pollution to ensure its safety for all those who use it.

At the assembly, the people deplored the poor nature of the road network in the district.

They contended that the situation was affecting the development of the area and appealed to the government and the district assembly to take urgent measures to rehabilitate the roads to facilitate the movement of people and the easy transportation of foodstuffs to the markets.

The people said they were also not happy about the manner contracts were awarded to contractors who were not known in the area and said this situation was responsible for the execution of shoddy work and abandonment of contracts.

They further asked the government to award contracts to local contractors to ensure effective supervision and monitoring. Mr Bright Addai-Mununkum, the District Chief Executive, expressed concern about the increasing child labour activities in some schools in the district and called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to check this practice.

He asked the people to honour their tax obligations to enable the assembly improve upon its revenue base to support its commitment of providing their needs. 04 April 06
