Reality show organisers can exploit but make use of the given platform - Wiyaala

Though some organizers of music reality shows in Ghana have been credited for the quality and originality of their productions, a good number of people have raised concerns about why the organizers make little or no effort to usher participants and particularly winners of their shows into the mainstream industry. Some simply hold the view that organizers simply exploit the contestants.

Nevertheless, Ghanaian singer-songwriter, Wiyaala Noella who made it to the finals of the 2011 edition of “Stars of the Future” competition in addition to winning the 2012 Vodafone Icons Mixed edition has indicated on Radio Univers’ Brunch2Lunch show with Abrantepa, that she does not entirely agree with such thoughts.

“I will say 50% of each side is true. If they are using you to sell their brand, what do you do with that opportunity? You have to use the platform to sell yourself. You have to be smart about certain things. When I didn’t win ‘Stars of the Future’, I didn’t really get any kind of support musically”.

Adding, “The only support I got was performing on their platform after the event. They gave a three-month exposure which I embraced. So when you get such an opportunity, you have to grab it and showcase your talent. They actually give you something you can’t afford.”

Wiyaala, who is out with a new single, "Africa, ” advised newcomers to put in hard work to catch the eye of those with influence and money.

“It is frustrating if you don’t win. However, you need to come out with something even with your little effort. When I didn’t win ‘Stars of the Future’, I did my own video though it was not the best. And that was what I gave to my manager. He was amazed and decided to manage me”, she told Abrantepa, host of the show.
