OPINION: The theme of Awards held; any impact on its objectives?

Multiple award schemes in our entertainment industry is making the various disciplines highly competitive and as such awards event organizers should be recommended for their hard work and efforts.

In doing so, there is the need to monitor and observe closely what these awards organizers do and the general impact they have on the individuals who follow the schemes.

Some issues bothering our awards schemes range from lack of transparency on the part of the board or committee which oversees the awards, organizers inability to provide promised items to winners including trophies and again the issue of 'cronyism' and favoritism on the part of the organizers.

One aspect of these awards schemes which has been left unattended to is the themes they attach to the organization and whether really, the awards organizers attach seriousness to the themes they add to their awards.

In this piece, the writer has compiled some few awards schemes in Ghana and their themes to verify if really they have a correlation with their set objectives.

Starting from the yet to be held Television Awards Ghana also known as TAG, they have given us 'Promoting Core Values In Television Broadcasting' as their theme.

Now a little break down will pose questions like what are the values in television broadcasting and which of them will come across as being the core ones.

This opening theme makes the objective of the awards scheme vague without knowing the real points the organizers are trying to achieve at the end of the day.

It is our hope that the organizers will come out with straight forward themes and objectives for followers to be able to measure their success or failure.

Radio and Television Personality Awards also known as RTP is one award scheme which has enough controversies surrounding its organization and process.

The board constituting the awards scheme is not known amidst other serious allegations and more.

Just like the theme for this year`s RTP is 'Aiming For Gold' and again one would ask what gold is and where is gold in the organization of Radio and Television awards.

Knowing the level of decay in our radio and television front, the organizers should be able to come out with a theme which will be more beneficial to the industry more than the general 'Aiming for God' we have as the theme for this year`s awards.

This writer remembers vividly when PRO of Charter House George Quaye explained that music everywhere is their theme because to them there was music everywhere in Ghana as of last year when they were preparing for the awards.

Ghana Music Awards, 'Music Everywhere' can be pardoned because of their explanation but if they had come out with a different theme, that would have been a different story.
