National Dance Company performs ‘Firestorm’

The National Drama Company will on Friday, April 4, perform Firestorm, an attention- grabbing play directed by Dzifa Glikpoe at the National Theatre in Accra.

Written by Sackey Sowah, the play reveals the story of a group of women who decide to revolt against a society dominated by men while attempting to create an egalitarian community.

The performance, which will be repeated on Saturday, April 5, will parade several acclaimed actors. They include Mawuli Semevor, Edinam Atatsi, Watara Braimah and Ato Ghartey.

The director manages to send the audience to a distant village where aggrieved women, obviously fed up with male chauvinism, resolve to take the law into their own hands.

Employing revolutionary style tactics, they retreat into a forest and launch periodic night time attacks on activities, practices and events they consider against the well- being of women.

In one brazen attack, they successfully kidnap a girl who was to be married against her wishes thereby disrupting the planned ceremony while challenging the authority of the village elders.

Firestorm, which is being presented in collaboration with the National Theatre of Ghana, was successfully performed last year to cheering crowds in the German cities of Cologne, Hagen, Mulheim, Krefeld and Monchengladbach.
