Kobina Amissah-Sam who had his major breakthrough from the movie “Beasts Of No Nation” has complained that Ghanaian movies lack good storylines.

The actor who played Agu’s father in the Cary Fukunaga directed movie told Mzgee of Hitz FM in chat that he has been trying to find a Ghanaian movie with good story for sometime now but he has not come across any. According to him, most Ghanaian movies are about love stories.

He later named Kwaw Ansah’s “Love Brewed in the African Pot” and “I Told You So” as local movies with good storylines.

“My passion is on a good story and production, that is all. I’m trying to find a very good solid story. Apart from Kwaw Ansah’s Love Brewed in the African Pot and I told you so, the crop of movies we have now are just about love stories.”

When MzGee asked “not even Shirley and Leila’s movies?”, he answered “I like Shirley’s movies because of the quality that she puts into it but most of the storylines are not different from what we watch in foreign movies. Leila, she gets good money, she does great production but same thing”

Amissah-Sam quickly added, “I would do a Leila or Shirley Frimpong Manso production but the storyline is the problem.”

“I want roles that will challenge me and bring you who you are but not trying to play an artificial person. I can sacrifice when the story is good but I can’t do a movie you will not even get the head and tail of the story. It is just this normal love stories that we see packed with all the stars that we have”

He advised Ghanaian moviemakers to unearth talents instead of always casting same people for movies.

“Sometimes you just need to go out there and explore new faces. All these boys we see in the movie had not acted before but look at the performance they put up.

So if we could do away with these all inclusive stars in one movie and go out there and explore, that is all”
