Mfansteman crowns Golden Jubilee beauty queen

Saltpond, Mar 14, GNA - Miss Gifty Quainoo, a 28-year-old hairdresser of Saltpond has been crowned as the Mfantseman District Golden Jubilee Beauty Queen in a pageant organised by the District branch of the National Association of Beauticians and Hairdresser (NABH) in collaboration with the District Ghana at 50 Anniversary Planning Committee.

Miss Susana Mends and Miss Philomena Arthur both beauticians were the runners in the contest they wore traditional apparels and hairstyles to match.

In a speech, Mr. Robert Quainoo-Arthur, District Chief Executive (DCE) expressed concern about how the youth were discarding traditional dressing for foreign ones and commended the organisers for encouraging the use of traditional attires.

"There is beauty in our traditional way of dressing we should not discard them for 'apuskelekes'", the DCE stated.

Let us portray ourselves as Ghanaians but not as "proto-type" foreigners, Mr Quainoo-Arthur said and expressed the hope that the next 50 years would bring a change "in our way of doing things". Nana Ataapim Kweenu VIII, Presiding Member of the District Assembly, called on organisers of beauty pageants in the country to encourage the use of traditional attire.

He stated that, "Apparel makes the man" and said that some people had landed themselves into trouble because of the way they dressed. Miss Josephine Bennin, President of the District NABH, expressed gratitude to the Planning Committee for supporting the Association by providing prizes for the award winners.

Miss Doris Oppong, Secretary of the Association, appealed to organisations and well-to-do citizens from the area to help the Association to make the pageant a regular feature to instil a sense of decency in the dressing of the youth.
