Man, 52, writes SSCE again

Accra, Oct. 20, GNA - Mr Gordon Wetcher, 52, is to writing the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for the second time, determined to make the grade at the second sitting to enable him to pursue a course in a science-related field or journalism. Undeterred by his heavy schedule, Mr Wetcher, who is a pupil teacher with 28 years experience, school supervisor, husband and father of three, says he is going to change the Grade E's he scored in Economics, Biology and Elective Maths at the first sitting in November/December 2005 SSCE.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at the Trade Fair Site in Accra after writing the Economics I paper on Thursday, Mr Wetcher said he was determined to better his grades.

At the first attempt in 2005 Mr Wetcher, who said he is the Supervisor of Osu Royal Preparatory School in Accra, said he scored B in the core subjects of English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies.

He said he was offering the same subjects again at the second sitting and was expecting a better performance. "I hope to change the three E's and move up with the other subjects too," Mr Wetcher said.

"I realise that I would become a waste if I don't upgrade now. I don't want to remain a pupil teacher till I retire. I have to advance and I want opportunities in the bank, a science institution, the media or an organisation that would require the use of science skills." Mr Wetcher said he had to attend part-time classes adding that the biggest challenge was his friends, young students and candidates teasing him.

He said he joined the young boys in the teasing and soon they were happy with him and accepted that he was only trying to improve himself despite his age.
