Mama Zimbi Reaches Out To More widows

Ace presenter Joyce Akumaa Dongotey-Padi, popularly known as Akumaa Mama Zimbi, has inaugurated another widows group under her Widows Alliance Network (WANE).

This event was organized at the premises of the Salvation Army Church in Suhum in the Eastern region with over 50 widows in attendance

WANE, which is one of the projects under the Mama Zimbi Foundation (MZF), aims at emancipating Ghanaian widows from the social, cultural and economic difficulties brought about by the injustices they face because of their status.

To date, WANE has formed over 300 widowhood clubs and associations with over 6,000 widows in free membership throughout Ghana. The project was introduced to equip widows in Ghana with the right employable skills, human rights education, reproductive health and social integration programmes to create a different idea in how Ghana’s communities perceive and treat widows.

Mama Zimbi later disclosed that WANE will hold its 4th national Widows Alliance Conference (WAC) on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre, La, under the theme ‘Widowhood Is Not A Curse, But Ordained By God’. This conference is also to celebrate the United Nations International Widows Day.

The annual national Widows Alliance Conference for advocacy and national widows’ cohesion is organized on a large scale as the grand occasion where all of Ghana and Africa are made to appreciate the roles widows are playing as ambassadors of change in their communities. It also serves as the ideal dialogue platform for the advocacy of a comprehensive policy and legal direction for elevating the standards of widows in Ghana.
