Majid Arrested In Lebanon

For reasons he still claims stark ignorance of, Ghallywood star actor Majid Michel can now spill the beans about his arrest and detention in Lebanon sometime last year.

Born to a Lebanese father a and a Ghanaian mother, Majid had transited in the Western Asian country from London in the United Kingdom (UK), immediately after picking his first-ever career award as the Africa Best Actor at the African Films Festival and Academy Awards, otherwise known as the ZAFAA.

The trip was to enable him to briefly visit his paternal family members, as well as show them the award, before returning to Ghana. But luck was not on his part, as he was arrested and detained by security operatives immediately he touched down at the airport. “I was lucky that I had the award statuette with me, which caused my release,” he narrated, evading as to what exactly his offence was. Majid was going public with the story for the very first, a year after the incident, at a brief ceremony in Accra last Saturday, to officially announce the opening of nominations for this year’s ZAFAA.

He described his experience with the award as “a blast,” and urged filmmakers across the continent, particularly in the country, to take interest in the ZAFAA and pick your entry forms for awards this year.” The nominations, which take immediate effect, close on May 20, to allow O’je entertainment, the organizers, to hold the grant event in London, from October 20 to 22 this year.

Mr. Sam Anwuzia, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the O’je Entertainment told journalists, in a response to an earlier question, that the ZAFAA would never come to Africa. “We’re currently thinking about another entertainment award which could be held in Africa, but as for the ZAFAA, to be frank with you, it’ll remain in Europe,” he insisted, ruling out the possibility that, one day in the future, the awards would be held elsewhere on the continent.
