MOVIE MAKERS IN UK TO FORM ACTORS GUILD

A quick observation by Flex newspaper and Ghanaianmovie.com, tells us that in no time there will be a formation of Actors Guild Association of Ghana in U.K. due to the rate at which Ghanaian movies are growing in the Ghanaian comminutes in UK. Speaking to Nana Hemaa Dokua who is mostly seen in most of the movies coming from the Ghanaian communities in UK, she revealed that she has been in the acting business during her years in UK. She is now 34 years. Before she started acting, she was then a beautician and later had the opportunity to be on radio where she used to do commercials for online radio station called Rainbow Radio. She received a script for a movie called “Tears of Sarah’ and after a successful show, she has not looked back again.

She continued that after Tears of Sarah, the producers came back again to give her another script and from there she started attracting other producers in the industry. “After Tears of Sarah, many producers contacted me but I was not too comfortable because I thought acting was not my field but then I was just giving it a try. I realized later that I could even do better than some people. I featured in Agya Koo in London and I can boldly say that I played my roles perfectly. Very soon, I will be coming up with another one called Ex- Wife“ she noted.

When Nana Hemaa Dokua who is also a Kibi Queen was asked whether she is comfortable to be a Ghanaian actress in the UK who is not recognized in Ghana, she responded that she was not really concentrating on the acting like she does for his media profession. She continued that she will be entering into the business full time now that fans are encouraging her. “But even with the few movies, I can see that Ghanaians back home have also recognized my presence. After movies like Aburokyie Beyie and Aya Koo in London, I came to Ghana last year and was given a good welcome by movie fans. I only have to work on my image back home in Ghana since they must also know me” she added. Talking about the Ghanaian movie industry in U.K, she revealed that anytime a poll is being run, our movies also get rating which signals that we are doing well. She recounted that movie fans in U.K normally compare Ghanaian movies to Nigerian movies when ranking African movies and the main complaints are that Nigerians invest heavily into their movies than Ghanaians.

Commenting about movies in U.K, she observed that it was formally the Twi movies which dominated their industry but they are expanding the language barrier especially to English to attract non- Ghanaian viewers.

Her latest movie Ex-wife is about a house wife who taught she could get a better man outside her marital life but ended up getting bad deals along the line. She regretted getting out of her marriage but then it was too late. She urged everyone to come to the Tooting Leisure Centre in U.K on 29th August 2010 for the grand premiere.
