Locally produced films lack distributors not good content – Peter Sedufia

Multiple award-winning filmmaker, Peter Kofi Sedufia has said one of the major reasons why locally produced movies are unable to go far is lack of distributors.

In his opinion, Ghanaian movie makers in recent times have produced standard films which have earned global recognition but the only setback is to sign a deal with a distribution company or agency to sell these movies on a larger scale across the world.

“I’ve said several times on many platforms that the major thing we lack in the Ghanaian film space is not good films, but, distributors.

“I don’t think Ghana has any person or agency that can call itself a distributor. I’ve been waiting to be proved wrong, and still waiting,” Peter Sedufia laments

In a Facebook post sighted by Kasapafmonline.com, the Chief Executive Officer of OldFilm Production noted that movie producers in countries like Nigeria and South Africa are benefiting amidst the Covid-19 pandemic since their contents are streamed online.

According to him, it is unfortunate Ghana cannot boast of vibrant and financially-supporting local online streaming platforms.

“Another thing we lack is vibrant and financially rewarding local online streaming platforms for our contents. In times like this Covid-19 pandemic, when lots of people are indoors, we’re all watching Netflix that doesn’t have most of our local contents.

“But, go to Nigeria; they’re probably watching Iroko, CongaTV and few other local online platforms who pay for contents, plus Netflix.

“Go to South Africa, they’re also probably streaming Showmax and few other local platforms who pay for contents, plus Netflix. And note, that’s where Netflix opened its first office in Africa – Do the math. Distributors are the legs of every content, no matter how good,” He added.

Sedufia urged people to invest more in locally produced contents and producers like himself who are willing to go the extra mile to serve people with quality content.

His work as a director and producer includes award-winning movies like Keteke, Sidechic Gang, Master, 3 Maids, Away Bus – a joint production with Kofas media and Aloe Vera.
