Hiplifers Absent At Mac Tontoh's ‘One Week' Celebration

The week one celebration of the late Mac Tontoh of Osibisa music group was held late Monday, August 23, 2010 at his Airport West residence in Accra.

Sadly and regretfully, Hi Newspaper gathers, no single Hiplife artiste showed up at the event, making one wonder if they would make it to the funeral scheduled in early October.

One veteran musician, name withheld, expressed utmost shock at what is fast becoming 'a dangerously bad character' among our young musicians. “You only see them at the niteclubs and at Ghana Music Awards because there'd be money to pick there”.

“That is why they hardly acquire experience and lessons from us the old folks in this business”.

Mac Tontoh died late Monday at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. He suffered stroke, diabetes and was flown to London during the earlier stages of the stroke for treatment and his condition improved markedly.

Present at the one week celebration hosted by the late musician's family members, were J.A. Adofo, Diana Hopson, K.K Yeboah, Jewel Ackah, Bessa Simon, Ben Brako, Pat Thomas among others. The funeral is scheduled for Kyerepatre in the Ashanti Region on October 2.

7 GH Rappers To Appear On 2010 Bet Hip Hop Awards By Hi Newspaper

Hi Newspaper has had firsthand exclusive preview of a video that features 7 of Ghana's hottest rappers that would be aired at this year's BET Hip hop Awards.

Known as BET Cifer (Cipher), it is an annual ritual for American TV Station, BET, to do a video of upcoming rappers that is aired during their Hip Hop Awards.

It usually serves as a recruitment tool for producers and agents who made contact the featured artistes afterwards. Usually American rappers and other living in the US feature on it, for the first time, African rappers would be shown.

The artistes who featured in the video are D Black, Sarkodie, Tinny, Ayigbe Edem, Kweku T, Baby Gee and Reggie Rockstone. Hiplife Godfather, Reggie Rockstone, who showed the video to Hi Newspaper later told us that, BET has been following the Ghana rap scene for some time and has seen some talent here, “also one of the heads of the BET Awards was a former classmate in the States who has seen my progress and decided to contact me for Africa's first cifer.”, says Rockstone

The freestyle video was shot with the stage name Magnificent 7 and lasts for about 4 minutes. Reggie Rockstone who chose the artistes on the cifer said he chose each artiste to represent a different language or topography of rappers used in Ghana.

In the video, Rockstone is the only artiste in African print, spotting a boubou. “I wore that to show something African knowing very well that all the other artiste would be wearing T-Shirts and other Western attires. Tinny spotted a black T-Shirt with the inscription “Live fast or Die Young.” Sarkodie spotted a customized Konvict cardigan, Ayigbe Edem wore a “The Last Two” branded T-Shirt and Baby Gee, the only girl in the group, also wore a black Cardigan over a white T-Shirt.

In Rockstone's rap, he made reference to the history of hip hop and the fact that top artistes like Jay Zee has at point in their lives visited Ghana. He also mentioned Hiplife as his wife whose children he loved and gave prop to legendary American rapper, Guru.

He explained that, he deliberately did that to prove that there are people in Ghana who know what rap music is and who understand rap. He also believed doing that would make people take the other rappers serious.

Top American rappers who have featured on a cifer include Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Black Thought, Papoose, Ace hood, Cassidy, fabulous, Jadakiss etc.

Actresses Turn to 'Players' Because Of Their Men - Beverly Afaglo By Hi Newspaper

When Hi Newspaper wanted to investigate why some female celebrities move from one male celebrity to another in search of intimate relationship and sometimes get branded 'whores; not many were ready to contribute.

“The general notion that actresses are 'spoilt' and therefore move from one guy to another for relations is largely due to the guys.” says actress Beverly Afaglo.

She argues that, most actresses, unfortunately, change guys because most of the guys who come into their lives “don't want them for keeps but for sex or sometimes their fame”.

“It's amazing how some men say all sort of things when they want to get into your pants and later find ways to throw you out after achieving their goal”

So what should female celebrities in such situations do? “The fact that you have bad taste at a relationship doesn't mean you should give up on guys” “That's why you find actresses moving from one star to the other and from one top footballer to the other”, Beverly hints.

The Terracotta Best Actress in Comedy winner who has been dating musician Eugene Baah (choirmaster/Honeho of Praye fame) for the past four years has a word for her colleagues as well, “The devil you know is better than the angel you don't know”.

“Sometimes it's better to stick to the bad guy than go out looking for a better guy because he may not exist.” Narrowing down to herself, she said, “Eugene and I had had bad times when people thought our relationship had hit the rock but we ended up stronger.”

Born and bred in Tema, the “Prince's Bride” actress is a fun-loving person. Since she met and fell in love with Eugene, they found common grounds. “Eugene is an indoor person, loves to stay at home, watch TV, write (not just songs) and draw. I had to change my 'chilling' lifestyle in order to be compatible.”

Aside acting, Beverly runs Glamour Beauty Saloon at Tema Community 9.
