INTERVIEW: Designer Anastasia Afiyo of Afiyo Creations on building her brand

What is Afiyo Creations about and which year did it officially start?

Afiyo Creations is a jewelry accessory brand that produces bespoke jewelries made of beads with fabrics and metal chains. Afiyo Creations collects its raw materials from some parts of Ghana (Koforidua , Dodowa and Somanya ) and imported materials to create bespoke accessories. Our main goal is to make people develop interest for beaded accessories. It officially started on January 1, 2012.

Reaction from family?

My family has always believed and supported me in everything I do but what surprises them the most especially my parents is the fact that I was never trained or had any special training in art.

What role do you play, and what are your responsibilities at Afiyo creations?

I’m the creative designer. I create designs and assemble the materials into a great piece. I also help my clients to choose the right accessory to fit an occasion.

How many members make up the team?

Three core members, that’s me (Creative Director), Naa Adjeley (Public Relations) and Antoinette (Sales Personnel). We have a great team aside these three core members which includes Ben Bond (photographer), Cecil (Logo designer), Evans (graphic designer), our supportive friends and clients are all members of Afiyo Creations team.

What inspired you to start the company?

I used to buy imported beaded accessories a lot which I hardly see people wear by then and I realized that there was nothing special about the accessories I had so I decided to make something everyone can wear to any occasion.

What are some of the challenges you faced at the initial stage of the company?

I didn’t really plan at the initial stage so I had a whole lot of issues as in academics at school and my relation with my clients was not too good since I was always disappointing them.

Products?

Some of our products are necklace (made of beads fused with fabric, metal chains, wiring works), bracelets, brooch, earrings, hair bands and key holders.

How easy or difficult is it for you as a young entrepreneur, seeing as you combine school and work?

As the saying goes “nothing good comes easy …” it’s been a tough road but since I know where I want to get to, I’m determined and focused to win the price.

Any memorable moments in your life as an entrepreneur?

The days I spent with the children in Obrachire in 2012 during our maiden village school beading project. They were amazing. I love seeing people happy so I try my best to put a smile on the face of people I meet.
