“I am alive and very strong”, says Lumba

The soft-spoken highlife music icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, aka Daddy Lumba, whose music has gone down well with Ghanaian music lovers, has asked the public to dispel any death rumour going round about him.

The musician, who has been consistent with the release of multiple-hit albums and has established himself as one of Ghana’s most popular singers of his genre, highlife, told BEATWAVES, “I am not dead as being speculated by people. People wish me dead but I am alive and very strong. I have been very ill for some time now but now I am very well and strong.”

Daddy Lumba, who won three awards at the Ghana Music Awards in 1999, explained that “I do not know why some people would wish me dead. I am not disturbed at all because I take it as a rumour targeted at wrecking me. I am still alive and still love all my fans.”

According to him, he would make himself available to his numerous fans through a number of musical concerts to be staged throughout the country starting from this April, this year.

“I am going to stage a live musical concert with Amakye Dede and a few others in all the 10 regional capitals.”

Daddy Lumba (DL) is a phenomenal musician with an incredible career spanning over 20 years. He remains one of the most consistent musicians alive.

He announced his presence in the music scene in the early 1980s, with a hit song ‘Yeeye Aka Akwantuo Mu’ with Nana Acheampong (known together as ‘Lumba Brothers’).

This song depicts the number of Ghanaians who leave the country to seek greener pastures abroad, mainly due to the economic challenges that they encounter in their own country.

Daddy Lumba later went solo with a hit album ‘Wo Ho Kyere’ in 1999 which he featured Ofori Amponsah. His solo career has been nothing short of controversy; one moment he would release a gospel album and in the next he would produce provocative lyrics and music videos.

His music had evolved over the years to reflect the changes in taste and demands for music; he can currently be described as a contemporary highlife artiste. Daddy Lumba has won several Ghana Music Awards and other excellence awards and continue to appeal to the young and old.

Some of his songs include: ‘Obi Ate Meso Bo’, ‘Sika Asem’, ‘Ohia Asem’, ‘Playboy’, ‘Sesee Wo Se’, ‘Odo Foforo’, ‘Biribi Gyegye Wo’, among many others. In all, Daddy Lumba has produced over 25 albums in which he wrote and produced.
