Ghanaians should learn to appreciate their own – Tic Tac

Popular Ghanaian artiste and winner of Musician of the year at the Ghana Music Awards in 2004, Tic Tac says music lovers in Ghana should appreciate the efforts of Ghanaian artistes working tirelessly to keep the industry running. According to Tic Tac, he doesn’t understand why Ghanaians tend to adore and appreciate artistes from other parts of Africa and the world and neglect their own.

Tic Tac told Real Eugene on The Xclusive Chat on Radio Univers that, he believes Ghanaian artistes have done remarkably well to gain the recognition of the world, but Ghanaians fail to take note of that.

"…there are Ghanaian artistes who have become such huge iconic musicians in other people’s land that Ghanaians should be proud of. They see artistes from other African countries, and I don’t know what they think. Their (Ghanaian] artistes have already done that and still doing that so we should appreciate our own.'

Responding to claims that Ghanaian artistes are arrogant, the ‘Philomina’ hitmaker disagreed and stated that our artistes have rather been taken for granted for far too long.

He added that our society sometimes prevents artistes from expressing themselves in creative ways and anyone who tries to do this is labelled as arrogant.

‘Ghanaian artistes are not arrogant at all. The country has made them dull because they are not allowed to express themselves. Anytime you express yourself, they say you are proud….Ghanaian artistes over respect.’

Nana Kwaku Okyere Duah, nicknamed Tic Tac, whose musical career began in 1997 as a member of the duo, Natty Strangers, has survived the different phases of music in Ghana and continues to be one of the greatest talents Ghana has produced.

The product of Labone Secondary School released his first album at the age of eighteen (18). Comparing the young artistes of his time with those of today, Tic Tac indicated that young artistes of today are not given enough opportunity to showcase their talent like before.

‘…we are not giving a lot of opportunities to the new guys to exhibit what they got. When I sprang up those times, we used to do a lot of rap battles on stage. You go on stage and rap.’

Tic Tac is currently promoting his new singles, ‘Don’t let your baby go’ and ‘Joe Konka’ which is gaining much airplay on the radio. The ‘Kangaroo’ man asked fans to watch out for the video of ‘Don’t let your baby go’ which will be dropping soon.

The recipient of eleven (11) Ghana Music Awards and artiste who has performed alongside music heavyweights such as Freddy Meiway, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Kanda Bongo Man, and Buju Banton revealed to Real Eugene that he wants to be called to the bar soon.

‘I would love to be a lawyer…’
