Ghanaians celebrate Independence Day with street parties, jams

The observance of Ghana’s 56th Independence Day anniversary on Wednesday was characterized by street parties and jams in Accra.

The Osu Oxford Street, Obra Spot near Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Bambolino at Darkuman were filled with merry makers who danced to hip-life and hip-hop music from giant speakers on the streets, drinking bars and restaurants.

At the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, hundreds of children mostly pupils gathered to entertain themselves.

Crystal Dag Consult, an event management company organised an Azonto competition for pupils selected from various schools in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

At the end of the dancing competition, Mary Okyere, a 3-year-old pupil of the Maryland International School in Accra emerged winner as she exhibited great Azonto moves to the admiration of the judges and the audience.

At the Accra Sports Stadium, the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, organised a Unity Concert party with the aim of promoting and highlighting the importance and value of Ghanaian music.

Hundreds of celebrants filled the Stadium to witness live music performances by famous Ghanaian artists like Okyeame Kwame, Guru, R2Bees and Tinny.
