In recent times, some mainstream Ghanaian entertainers have stepped away from what they are widely known for, or in some cases have combined entertainment with politics, to explore active roles in governance and policymaking.

Over the years, these two worlds have intertwined seamlessly, and several individuals are thriving in their political spaces.

Here’s a look at some entertainers who are actively involved in politics:

John Dumelo

Actor John Dumelo, known for his roles in Ghanaian and Nigerian movies, contested the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NDC during the 2024 elections and won.

Aside from serving as a Member of Parliament, he is also the Deputy Minister for Agriculture.

Kwame Asare Obeng (A-Plus)

Starting as a hiplife musician with politically charged songs, A-Plus transitioned into activism and later full-time politics.

In the 2024 elections, he was elected MP for Gomoa Central as an independent candidate.

Bice Osei Kuffour (Obour)

The former MUSIGA president contested the NPP primaries for Asante Akyem South and lost.

He then played key roles in political campaign communications and blended entertainment leadership with politics.

He was later appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Post under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government.

Mark Okraku-Mantey

As a music executive and entertainment analyst, Okraku-Mantey contributed to NPP’s creative arts policies and later served as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Rex Omar

The highlife musician has long been politically engaged with the NDC, serving on committees to develop creative industry policies and openly supporting the party since the 1990s.

Under the current Mahama administration, he has been appointed as a Presidential Staffer and Coordinator for the "Black Star Experience," a government initiative to rebrand Ghana through culture, arts, and tourism.

Bibi Bright

The actress became actively involved with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and was appointed Secretary of the Creative Arts Council under the Akufo-Addo regime, bridging government initiatives with the creative industry.

Abeiku Santana

The radio and TV personality was appointed Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, blending his entertainment background with national development.
His role focuses on marketing Ghana as a global tourism destination and leveraging media influence to drive tourism growth.

James Gardiner

Actor James Gardiner has also stepped into governance after years in the film industry.
In 2025, he was appointed Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority, working alongside Kafui Danku to oversee policy implementation and industry development within Ghana’s film industry

Kafui Danku

Actress and filmmaker Kafui Danku was appointed Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA) under the Mahama administration.

Beyond acting, Kafui Danku is an entrepreneur, author, and social advocate.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Classics from the University of Cape Coast and has also worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Her initiatives, including the Dream Achievers Project, focus on entrepreneurship and youth empowerment.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie

Veteran actress Dzifa Gomashie is one of the most prominent examples of an entertainer who has successfully transitioned into politics.
With more than three decades in theatre and television, she later moved into politics and currently serves as Member of Parliament for the Ketu South constituency.

In 2025, she was appointed Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts by President John Dramani Mahama.

Before this appointment, she served as a deputy to the Ministry from 2013 to 2017.
