Ghanaian-Russian photographer Liz Johnson Artur has been awarded a $12,500 (£10,000) bursary from the people in charge of the prestigious annual Turner Prize for contemporary artists.

Instead of the competition, which was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic, the British organisers have handed out 10 bursaries.

Artur has documented the African diaspora experience for the last 30 years.

“Black presence is something that I see,” she told the BBC last year.

“I’m going to these places that I frequent, and I look out for the people that I feel are here. But if I switch on the TV or open a magazine, I don’t see that presence.”
