Ghanaian Designer Abaya Dake Launches Sankofa Collection

We have a deep obsession with designers who uses print fabric and can creatively use it well, as most prints can be vicious to the eyes if not worse for the one wearing it.

For those who agree, you will be pleased to know about emerging Ghanaian fashion designer Abaya Dake who has mastered the technique of using prints in his work.

He studied at the Vogue style school of Fashion & Design in Ghana and is currently pursuing an advance creative and design skills at the Lindenwood University in Missouri.

Dake took a bold step to launched his Sankofa collection a few days ago, his presentation showcased five pieces of beautiful feminine silhouettes . On a colour of palette of white, red, turquoise blue, orange and cream; we saw elegance and consistency which we normally associate with established designers.

Although minimum prints were used, one can still correlate with the theme, the collection is a sneak peak of what Mr. Dake is yet to release. For us, our favourite piece in this collection is the short white fitted dress, with prints on the torso and architectural inspiration on the hips.

For those who may not know what Sankofa mean, it is an Akan language of Ghana that translates in English to “go back and get it” (san – to return; ko – to go; fa – to look, to seek and take) or the Asante Adinkra symbols of a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back, or of a stylised heart shape.

Could this mean Dake is returning to his roots to influence his collections, this is just our little guess, we will be interviewing Mr Abaya Dake shortly watch this space! abaya Abaya Abaya Abaya Abaya **
