Dear GhanaWeb: My girlfriend left me for five years and showed up on my engagement day

Dear GhanaWeb,

I was in a relationship with a woman for three years.

We truly loved each other. I did everything to make her happy, and she was always there for me. I was even planning to propose to her.

We lived together in my house most of the time. But one morning, I woke up and she was gone. I assumed she had gone to her place, but when I checked, she wasn’t there either. I called and texted her, no response. I started panicking, thinking something might have happened to her.

I reported her disappearance to the police. Even her best friend had no idea where she was. She asked if we had a misunderstanding, but there had been none.
I was heartbroken and kept asking myself why she would leave me like that.

I loved her deeply and decided to wait, hoping she would return. The police tried their best but couldn’t find her. She had already lost both of her parents, which made me even more worried.

Weeks turned into months, and months into years. Five years passed, and I still couldn’t move on. I couldn’t bring myself to love any other woman. A few women tried to get close, but I just wasn’t interested.

Six months ago, I met a new lady. We started talking, and I liked her from the first day. She would visit often, and we spent a lot of time together.

Gradually, I realized I was falling in love again. I opened up to her about my feelings, and to my joy, she felt the same way.

We began dating, and she’s been amazing, so loving, so supportive. I fell deeply in love with her and started thinking seriously about a future together. I spoke to my best friend, and he encouraged me to propose.

Last week, I planned a surprise proposal with my best friend’s help, at my house. When my girlfriend arrived, she was surprised but happy.

I got down on one knee with the ring in hand... and then, shockingly, my ex, the one who vanished, walked in.

I froze. I couldn’t go through with the proposal. My house was still filled with her framed pictures. My current girlfriend had asked about them before, and I told her everything.

The moment she saw my ex, she ran off. I had to face the woman who disappeared on me. She claimed she left because she had a family emergency and couldn’t return. She said many things, and I found myself believing her.

Then she cried and accused me of giving up on her, ignoring the fact that I waited for five years.

She said she is back now and that I should forget about my current girlfriend. But it’s not that simple. My current girlfriend helped me heal. She made me believe in love again. I truly love her.

Yet, seeing my first love again stirred old emotions. I feel like I might still love her too. She’s now living in my house because she says she has nowhere else to go, and she returned specifically for me.

Now I’m torn between two women. Both make me feel alive. I’ve been asked to choose one, but I honestly don’t know what to do.

Should I go back to my first love? Or should I move forward and propose to the woman who has been there for me these past few months?

Please, I need help.
