Dear GhanaWeb,

My father married my mother as his second wife without divorcing his first. He has a son and two daughters with his first wife, while I am his only child with my mother.

Growing up, he always lived with his first wife and family, but visited my mother and me at least once a week. I knew he loved us because he took good care of us.

Three years ago, he stopped contacting us after one of his daughters from his first marriage discovered our existence.

Apparently, my mother had been kept a secret. Both my parents had told me I had other siblings and even showed me their pictures. My father assured me that they knew about me and that he wanted us to meet someday.

However, after his daughter found out, she deleted all our contacts from his phone and threatened to report him to his mother if he continued visiting us. From then on, he barely called and stopped visiting. He came once, and after that, I never heard from him again.

Last month, after three years of silence, I managed to reconnect with him because I needed his support to further my education. We spoke, and he promised to help, but after a few days he stopped answering my calls.

Since then, I’ve been trying to reach him without success. Thankfully, I completed school with my mother’s support.

I know my father has the means to secure me a good job and change my life, but he refuses to connect with us.

His marriage to my mother may have been illegal, and I understand that, but what about me? I am his daughter. Why can’t he be there for me? Why am I struggling when I have a wealthy father?

He was once a caring and loving father, but now he seems to lack responsibility and decisiveness. He is reacting to the influence of his other children and wife. At 57 years old, why can’t he stand his ground?

I feel abandoned and helpless. I truly need his support as my father. What can I do to get him to treat us the way he used to?
