Dear GhanaWeb: I was robbed after giving stranded people a lift

Dear GhanaWeb,

Last week, I was heading home after work. I actually passed somewhere to get something, so I returned late, around 10 p.m.

I saw people stranded by the roadside, lots of them. Every bus stop I got to, people were all over. I made a decision to drop some people heading my direction.

I stopped at one of the bus stops, picked up four people heading my way and we left. It was three ladies and a gentleman, whom I let sit in the front with me.

I had a few things in the car, my laptop was in the back seat alongside a document for a land I purchased just two weeks ago and some other documents. I had my phone and wallet in the front seat.

As the guy was about to sit in front, I had to take the items and place them somewhere in front. I was dropping them off one at a time because it seemed everyone had a different destination.

We were talking in the car, discussing the hardship in getting a car to and back from work, while I lamented about fuel and other things. I was home successfully, around 11 p.m.

So while alighting from my car when I got home, I tried to locate my phone, but it was gone. I am certain the gentleman took that one. My wallet wasn’t taken anyway, probably because it was closer to me.

In the back seat, the brown envelope containing my documents and laptop was gone. I had actually forgotten about them; they came to mind when I couldn’t find my phone.

I asked myself why someone would help you and in return, you would rob them. Everything was gone. I kept asking myself why they even took the envelope, because it is not like whoever took it could use them for anything.

Funnily enough, these are women in my back seat. I don’t know why I can take everything from anyone but female thieves; I can’t.

I see people complaining that car owners who pass pedestrians by are wicked. But trust me, I will never stop by to pick anyone; I don’t care what name I am called. With this behaviour, how can we help people? I know it’s not everyone, but you can’t tell who a person is by looking at their face.

Thinking about my documents, I’m not sure they can use them for anything, but what if they figure out a way? I won’t even recognise them when I meet them again so how will I get them arrested? What do I do now?
