Dear GhanaWeb,
I am a 29-year-old married woman and have been married for three years. My mother did not want me to marry my husband. She said she didn’t like him but never gave me a reason.
My father, on the other hand, supported our marriage. As the head of the family, I went ahead because my husband has been good to me and, to this day, has done nothing to prove otherwise. With my father’s blessing, I married him, even though my mother refused to attend the wedding. She stopped speaking to me, though I still reach out because I cannot hold grudges against her.
A few months after our marriage, my father died under mysterious circumstances. No one knows exactly what happened. He complained of pain in his feet one morning, and by noon, he was gone.
I was pregnant at the time, and during the funeral period, I miscarried at five months. When I cried to my mother, she told me she had warned me not to marry my husband and suggested that was the reason I lost the pregnancy. She added that what she sees sitting down, I wouldn’t see even if I climbed a mountain.
I became pregnant again. At five months, I had a disturbing dream in which my mother was attacking my unborn child. That same night I woke up bleeding and lost the pregnancy. When it happened a third time, after another similar dream, I felt too guilty to tell my husband that my mother appeared in it.
Eventually, I confided in my mother about the dreams and the losses. She became upset, accused me of calling her a witch, and told my siblings about it.
I apologised and explained that I never accused her of anything, I only wanted to share what I was experiencing. She reacted angrily and even threatened to curse me, which has left me confused and distressed.
My husband and I continue to pray and seek strength, but I am struggling to understand what is happening. Is my mother’s behaviour connected to her disapproval of my marriage? How should I handle this situation moving forward?
