Dear GhanaWeb,
I travelled abroad three years ago with big dreams, not just for myself but for my girlfriend too.
We were together before I left, and I wanted to build a future for us. My job wasn’t glamorous, I worked as a cleaner abroad, but I worked hard.
Every month, no matter how little I had left for myself, I made sure my girl was comfortable.
Her rent, food, school fees for her younger brother, and even money for little things she wanted, all of that was on me.
She was always demanding and complaining about money, so I made sure I came through for her no matter what.
Sometimes, she would call me urgently asking for money. I had to find a way to send it, even if it meant working extra hours or sacrificing my own needs, but I never complained.
I thought I was doing what a man in love should do. She would tell me how much she loved me and how she couldn’t wait for me to come back so we could finally settle down together. I believed every word.
In December last year, I finally returned to Ghana. I came back with very little money, after all the remittances and expenses, I barely had enough left.
I was hoping to take a little break, find something stable to do here, and start afresh with her by my side.
The hustle abroad wasn’t easy, and everything I earned went to her, so those three years were full of stress and sacrifice.
But things changed when she realised I wasn’t the same money guy anymore. The warm messages turned cold. The excitement in her voice disappeared.
She started acting distant, coming up with excuses why she couldn’t see me.
At first, I thought maybe she was just busy, but something felt off. I don’t know if she thought money grows on the streets of Canada.
Then one evening, she agreed to meet me. I had been preparing my heart to propose and talk about our future. But when she showed up, she had a different motive. She handed me an envelope without even looking me in the eyes.
I opened it, and it was a pregnancy test result, not for me, but for another man, 16 weeks pregnant.
She then said the words that completely shattered me: “I think we should break up. You don’t want a woman who’s carrying another man’s child, do you? I’m sorry.”
Just like that, after everything. After all my sacrifices, after pouring my heart and sweat into making sure she was okay, she moved on the moment my pocket dried up.
I felt like a fool. Like I had wasted my money on a dream that was never real. I don’t even know how to heal from this.
All I know is that I came back expecting love and a future, but instead, I got betrayal.
What should I do now?
FG/EB
