Cuban Salsa group to perform at Next Door

Accra, Aug. 25, GNA - The Guama Salsa Group from Cuba would this weekend perform different kinds of salsa dance at the Next Door Beach Resort in Accra free of charge.

The group, which is in Ghana for two weeks from August 14 to August 29, would run workshops with Salsa Ghana, Salsa groups in Kumasi and cultural troupes at the Centre for National Culture in Accra and Kumasi. Salsa is a distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. The 10-member group comprising two guitarists, minor percussionists, drummers, vocalists and dancers has already performed at Golden Tulip Hotel and Aviation Social Centre in Accra and Way Out Hotel in Kumasi.

Mrs Maisie Howell, a fan of Salsa dance, told the GNA that Salsa had become the new craze in town especially for the urban youth and students.

She said the dance offered a perfect alternative to limited outings, a perfect substitute for keeping fit and an avenue for social relaxation

"The last three years have seen massive expansion with more than 10 clubs being opened, such that one can find Salsa joints every night of the week. Salsa dance has been nurtured and adopted by Ghanaians," Ms Howell, who is also the President of the Ghana/Caribbean Association, said.

The Guama Salsa Group was formed in Cuba in November 1998 in the city of Moron. Cuba is noted to have originated the Salsa Dance.
