Crab causes stir in Accra

Accra, 12 Jan. A crab found with a new 5,000-cedi note was last night burnt at the Osu-circle lorry station.

The crab which is believed to have picked the money from Osu market, was found and killed when it was making its way out of a pack of cement blocks where it was hiding.

Kalala, a drinking bar owner operating at the station, who spotted the crab, told the press today that around 7pm yesterday, he saw something moving from the blocks.

"In my curiosity, I found out that it was a very big crab which seemed to have been hiding in the blocks for a very long time".

He said he then called some of the tro-tro drivers and their mates at the station who helped to put four cement blocks on the crab to stop it from escaping.

Kalala said to their surprise, the crab remained alive after 30 minutes when they removed the blocks.

"It was there we discovered that it had a folded brand new 5,000 cedis note between its fore limbs."

The drivers, according to Kalala, poured petrol on the crab and burnt it after collecting the legal tender from it.

The money is at the moment in the possession of one Jaloo, a tro-tro driver at the station. Meanwhile, no one in the area has yet complained of a missing 5,000-cedi note.
