Court remands ex-convict in custody

Nkawie (Ash), July 18, GNA - Kwadwo Abebrese, 30, described by the police as a "notorious criminal," walked into the waiting arms of the police immediately he stepped out of the gates of the Kumasi Central Prison after serving a nine-month jail sentence for stealing. He was whisked to the Nkawie district court on a charge of causing damage and was remanded. Police said Abebrese has seven cases pending against him. Police Inspector G. K. Letsah told the court that on August 6 last year, the accused picked a quarrel with a 10-year-old girl at Akantansu and damaged her aluminum pan.

A policeman attempted to arrest Abebrese but he threatened him with a cutlass and later followed the girl to her house with the intent to kill her but she locked herself up in a room. The accused, bent on carrying out his plan, stood behind the door with the cutlass waiting for the girl but she did not come out. Inspector Letsah said the residents disarmed and handed him over to the police.
